Planning permission was granted for the construction of 75 holiday lodges within a Forestry Commission owned area of woodland. A company that provides holiday accommodation opportunities within wooded environments (with its associated wildlife) leases the woodland; the site was previously used as a caravan site. Ecological assessment and appropriate surveys were undertaken on behalf of the developer, to identify any ecological issues on the site and if common dormice were using the woodland, to assist in the gaining of the planning permission. Dormice activity was identified through survey, however it was considered that a European Protected Species Mitigation Licence would not be necessary for the project, due to the location of the animals.

The lodges were designed to have as minimal impact on their surroundings as possible, being built to high eco-build specifications on raised platforms. Specific long-reach cranes was utilised to ensure that minimal impact was made on the forest floor around each lodge. An Ecological Clerk of Works was required to supervise some of the works that could have had an impact on wildlife on the site, such as areas of vegetation clearance. The positioning of mitigation and enhancement measures on the site were also supervised, such as the erection of bat boxes and areas of new planting. To comply with a planning condition a Woodland Management Plan was drawn up for the site including management appropriate for the wildlife present.
