Long-term monitoring case study

Long term monitoring on road scheme

CEC has formed part of the team undertaking long-term monitoring surveys for lesser horseshoe bats on a completed road scheme in north Wales, on behalf of a multi-disciplinary consultancy. During construction of the scheme a commuting route for these bats across the route was identified, but it was not possible to provide a safe crossing point for bats in this location. Regular monitoring has been undertaken since 2011 comprising: surveys to observe bats crossing the road, and their behaviour when they do so; assessing bats’ use of the nearest available safe crossing points; and searching for bat casualties along the road itself. This monitoring has helped understand the impact which the scheme is likely to be having on lesser horseshoe bats, which has in turn helped identify whether any remedial works are necessary.
